Spring 2008 Sunday School Classes

Whether you’re 2 or 102, at Erin there’s a class for you. Maybe you’re an adult who likes round table discussions or a young family with children ready to learn the Bible stories you learned as a child. Whatever your spiritual needs, Erin has a place for you.

Children’s Sunday School

We provide opportunities for all children in our church family to learn about God in a caring, age appropriate setting. Nurseries are available for infants and toddlers.

The Two and Three Year Olds meet during the regular Sunday School time from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. The Gospel Light curriculum introduces them to God and His love for all of us through stories, songs and activities. Brooks Eggers, with the assistant of Mike Sharp, leads the class, which meets in the room directly behind the narthex and to the right of the stairway going down to the Fellowship Hall.

The curriculum for ages 4 through 5th grade is taught using the workshop rotation method. Each Sunday the children rotate by class into a different workshop where they study the same story over a four-week period using different learning methods. At 9:30 the children gather for a time singing, bible verse review, story review and offering. They then break into three age groups and attend one of the following workshops: Drama & Storytelling (Joe Jaynes), Games & Bible Skills (Mike Pierce), Art & Cooking (MaryAlice Vowell), and Audio Visual (Anna McKay).

The schedule for this Spring is:

  • Easter: Last Supper
  • Twenty Third Psalm
  • Rebecca

Youth Sunday School

During their middle school and high school years Sunday School guides pre teens and teens in making decisions about God and His role in their lives. Justin Bornhoeft and Sean Gahan teach the Middle School class in Room 108. This is the age when most kids first begin to ask questions about their faith, and the class provides a place to learn what Christians believe—and why.

The Senior Highs meet in Room 120. Each Sunday Emily Jenness leads them through an in-depth study of the books of the Bible.

Youth Groups

Erin also has active Youth Groups which meet on Sunday evenings. GET, (Gathering Erin Teens), is a time of fellowship and worship for all ages. Both groups meet together, eat a sack supper and participate in worship. After worship, the Youth Director, Becca Berry guides the middle and senior high girls in Bible study while Susan and George Hannah meet with the boys for study. In addition to the Sunday night meetings, both groups participate in mission projects and attend Presbytery youth events each Fall at Camp John Knox. The Senior Highs also join with other Presbyterian youth for Youth Summit in Gatlinburg in March, and at Montreat, NC for a week of intense spiritual experiences in the summer. Adult Sunday School

Young Adults

Tom and Eva Quinley lead this class, which is geared toward both singles and couples. They meet in the Heritage Room.

Connections

Rev. Stuart leads this class which meets in the Noah’s Ark room at 9:45.

The "Hard Sayings" in the Bible

While much that we find in the Bible is challenging, some passages are especially so. We’re tempted to skip them, but looking at them closely forces us to re examine our ideas. John House and the class look at both the historical and social context of some of these sayings and their theological implications.

Young at Heart

This class follows the PCUSA curriculum The Present Word. We welcome any adults to join us in learning and fellowship. The class meets in the room located next to the Heritage Room, and is taught by Don Quinley.

JavaScripture

The JavaScripture class meets in the Mini Kitchen. Kim Jaynes leads the group, which seeks to provide a community where we can share together as we learn to live out our faith in real life.

Other Opportunities for Learning at Erin

In addition to our Sunday School programs, Erin also offers study opportunities for adults at other times during the week. We invite you to join these groups, even if you already participate in our Sunday morning programs.

Monday Night Bible Study

This group has been studying the early years of Christ, His crucifixion and the evidence for Jesus outside of the Bible using The History Channel’s popular program, “Naked Archaelogist”. Come and join them Mondays at 7:15p.m. in the church parlor.

Wednesday Night Coffee Club

Erin offers a Bible study and discussion group for adults on Wednesday nights from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Each week, the participants look at a pre-assigned chapter of the Bible and share their thoughts, questions, and experiences that are relevant to the Bible chapter. At the end of the meeting, the text, questions, and notes for the next Bible chapter are given out as a homework assignment. All are welcome to join in this time of learning and lively discussion with Rev. John Stuart and Charles Snodgrass.

Presbyterian Women

All women are invited to join Erin’s two circles for a study of Ruth. Circle IV meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in Mary Scarbrough's home, and Circle II meets Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the church parlor. Vacation Bible School at Erin is always an exciting learning opportunity for our children. “God’s Big Backyard” is this year’s theme and June 16-20 is the date. For registration and additional information, please see the link located on Erin’s home page.

MOPS Mothers of Preschoolers — is a group that meets twice monthly for support and fellowship. Meetings are the second and fourth Thursdays from 9:30-12:30, with childcare provided. Coordinators for this year are Katina Sharp and Janette Smith.

Mommy & Me is for moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers with children 6 and under who wish to participate in a fun time of bonding with their children. The Mommy & Me Association is the first national membership organization dedicated to providing parent/ child playgroup leaders and participants with resources, recognition and support. By sharing information and ideas with each other, we believe that we will motivate and inspire excellence in parent/child playgroups and encourage parents to make the most of the time they spend with their children. Contact Katina Sharp for more information.
