Yet time and time again, God urges us to listen, which takes time, and a willingness to hear unexpected things. How can you take time to listen for God’s Word this week? What would you do if you heard something?

Theology seeks to describe who God has shown Godself to be. Sometimes though, our own biases and expectations creep in, and we end up describing what we wish God were like, creating God in our own image. How do we stay open to the unexpected ways God sometimes acts? How do we change ourselves to reflect who God created and calls us to be? What do we do when God does not meet our expectations?

Scripture is often in conversation with itself on how to include those who are “outside” the covenant community. The overall picture of scripture, though, is that all peoples are brought in to God’s household. Every person is a child of God regardless of whether they are a member of a church.
How do we balance scripture’s teaching to care for one another as members of a church family with its teaching to care for those who are “outsiders” as well?

As far as I’m concerned, Romans 8:38-39 might be the most important verses in all of scripture. The assurance of God’s steadfast and faithful love is what empowers us to look beyond our own frailty and failings and show love to others, even when it’s hard. Where have you seen God’s love in your life? Where has it been hard to see? What has the assurance of God’s love empowered you to do differently as you grow in grace and wisdom?
