The Beetles famously wrote, “Take a sad song and make it better.” But sad songs do something on their own – when you are already sad, the music of lament makes you feel less alone, and the melody or lyrics may offer a glimmer of future hope. The Bible is full of sad songs – there are more laments in the Psalms than any other genre. So, this week, read these Psalms, as well as other passages, where David mourns for Jonatha, and Israel feels God’s judgment. How has God come near, when you have sung a sad song?
