What is the character appropriate to discipleship? Certainly David offers us a negative example here, in his story of lust, adultery, and murder. The prophet Nathan elicits David’s sympathy in a story of an animal suffering. How often do we have a softer spot for animals than for humans in need? Paul calls us to live lives “worthy of the calling to which we have been called,” and Jesus cautions us to hunger for the bread that he, alone, can give. How can we grow into servants who reflect his life?
