Scripture turns the tables on our expectations. The law, which may seem harsh, and which is sometimes contrasted to “gospel,” was a gift of grace, “a lamp to our feet.” Indeed, Paul reminds us that God’s work often appears foolish in contrast to the world’s wisdom. And Jesus isn’t only a gentle shepherd; he is a fierce prophet, driving out merchants from the temple. God’s presence is always more complicated and mysterious than we imagine it. What contradictions do you experience, as we make our way through Lent?
