We move quickly to controversy and rejection of the one sent by God. Jeremiah is called as a prophet, with a great mission, and then is warned of the harsh consequences of speaking truth that people don’t want to hear. The psalmist cries out for deliverance from those who unfairly pursue him. Jesus reads scripture in the synagogue and then almost dares his audience to chase him over a cliff, which they do. In the context of all this conflict, Paul counsels love as the greatest spiritual gift. We hold onto love and seek to cultivate it, even in difficult circumstances.
