Our texts look forward and back this week. 2 Kings is a succession narrative, asking who can pick up the mantel when Elijah leaves the scene. In Luke, the disciples wonder who has the commitment to join Jesus’ work, and Paul warns the Galatians not to return to old ways of righteousness, when the freedom of Christ is on offer. Yet, the Psalmist, in a moment of despair, looks to God’s past faithfulness to find strength for a new day. What is our particular mix of looking back and moving forward?
