Some churches celebrate Pentecost as “the birthday of the church.” It was a Jewish festival, seven weeks after Passover, celebrating the giving of the law (the word “Pentecost” refers to the five books of the Torah). Christians celebrate a similar gift – that of the Holy Spirit, empowering the church with the spirit of Christ. Our texts recall that God’s spirit has always been with his people, bringing life in the valley of dry bones, moving over creation, and interceding in our prayers. Where are you aware of the Spirit’s power?
