We return to “ordinary time,” after the big events of the Christian story. Yet, God continues to speak, act, and call us forward. God calls Samuel, a story ending with the touching assertion that “God let none of his words fall to the ground.” The Psalmist praises God’s deep knowledge of our inner lives, and goes dark, calling for God’s judgment on enemies. Paul speaks of how Christ’s life is revealed in our suffering, and Mark remembers how Jesus’ reclaimed the Sabbath as a space for healing. If that’s ordinary, I’ll take it.
