This week we read from the book of Ruth, which many scholars believe was written to remind Israel of its rich heritage of receiving those from other countries rather than, as many after the exile lobbied for, trying to return to a fantasized purity of origin. Ruth the Moabite proves faithful and becomes an ancestor of David, the greatest king. We read Psalms of blessing and Jesus’ final teachings before his arrest, where the humility of the poor widow is the positive example in contrast to the puffery of the leaders. How do we reflect these values as we move forward together as a church and a country?
